COACH WILL WADE
MCNEESE STATE UNIVERSITY

In 2023, McNeese St, a member of the Southland Conference, rolled the dice and gambled on embattled basketball coach Will Wade.  Wade had been fired from LSU for NCAA violations the year before, while the Cowboys program was in disrepair after an abysmal 11 win season.

Upon Wade’s hire, McNeese St. Athletic Director, Heath Schroyer, knew it was time to go all in on an NIL program.  Southern Coast Sports was brought in to consult on the formation of the school’s official collective.  SCS named the collective and worked on the brand development, which included logos, website, social channels and initial donor literature.

SCS then helped the newly formed Ranch Collective with pitches to potential donors, training sessions with the Collective's student athlete partners, contract creation and compliance reviews.

After Wade’s 30 win first session and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the expectations for the Cowboys in his second year were even higher.  With high level portal players wanting to play for Wade and McNeese St, the Ranch Collective needed to go to a new level.  With a targeted fundraising strategy, Wade, Schroyer and Southern Coast Sports went to work, raising the necessary funds to field a competitive team.

With the funds raised, Southern Coast Sports negotiated all the contracts with the players for the collective and worked to match players with brands, resulting in marketing success and ROI for donor partners.   The end results was a Southland Conference Regular Season Championship, a Southland Conference Tournament Championship and the school’s first ever win at the NCAA Tournament (an upset of 5th seed Clemson.)

“Southern Coast Sports was vital to my success at McNeese.  They understand the value of NIL and how to really use the opportunities of a collective to build success for the program, the student-athletes and the donor partners.  They were a huge part of the foundation of why I was able to do what I did with my players and staff.  They were teammates and I can’t recommend working with them highly enough.” - Will Wade, Current NC State Head Basketball Coach and Former McNeese St. Head Basketball Coach

WHY SOUTHERN COAST SPORTS MEDIA TRAINS YOUR ATHLETES

Communication and a true understanding of how to maximize time in front of the camera is vital for athletes signed with a collective. These athletes are representatives of the university and the donor partners of the collective. Having your athletes go through media training is a way to ensure everyone goals of partnering with the collective are met. It’s also the value of having a former sports anchor working with our athletes.  We focus on media training for 3 main reasons:

1) Communication skills: Athletes are in the public eye, and media training can help them develop the communication skills necessary to effectively convey their thoughts and ideas to the public. This can be especially important during press conferences, interviews, appearances and other media events where athletes need to speak clearly and confidently.

2) Brand management: Athletes are often seen as role models, and their behavior both on and off the field can have a significant impact on their reputation and the way they are perceived by the public. Media training can help athletes develop the skills to manage their brand, properly represent donor’s brands, presenting themselves in a positive light. Many athletes rely on sponsorships and endorsements made possible through NIL Collective
relationships to earn income, and media training can help them present themselves in a way that appeals to potential sponsors and partners.

3) Crisis management: When athletes are involved in controversies or scandals, media training can help them handle the situation with grace and professionalism. This can help minimize the damage to their reputation, a donor’s brand and prevent negative publicity from spiraling out of control.
